CEU offers scholarships to variety of students

While no actual money changed hands, CEU gave away $1,170,000 in scholarships this year.
Departments, athletics, ambassadors, ASCEU Leadership, academics and a general scholarship fund are all allocated dollar amounts that they can give to students to use toward tuition.
“Scholarships should be used, and it
is the philosophy of the scholarship program, that the monies should be
used to recruit students, not retain them,” said Todd Olsen, director of admissions and scholarships.

In year’s past, departments were issued waivers for tuition, but in 2002 the system was changed. Faculty members have differing opinions on whether the change was a good one.
“With waivers, the cost never changed for tuition, now every year tuition costs are higher and so every year we have less money to spend.” said Dave Paur, CEU athletics director.
However, Mike Tryon of the welding department at CEU said, “It [the current system] allows you to allocate as much money as you feel necessary for each student … I award full tuition to students with high GPA’s and ACT scores while someone with average GPA or ACT score might only get a $500 scholarship.”
The total allocation for 2005-2006 was $1,170,000, however CEU plans for a 30 percent rate of decline so the actual money they planned to spend was $819,000.
Academic awards for freshmen and Sterling Scholars and other student recognition programs were expected to total $264,944. Awards for returning students and academic contributions were $255,132.
New returning student academic scholars were awarded $223,924. New leadership was awarded $42,000 and new ambassadors and student recruiters were awarded $18,500. The general scholarship fund had $108,000 in it.
Athletics received $83,000; $15,000 for cheer leading, $6,000 for the Eagle Dancers, $18,000 for each of the basketball teams, $13,000 for baseball team and $13,000 for the volleyball team.
The departmental scholarship fund was allocated $174,500. Theatre gets $17,000; cosmetology receives $15,000; art is allotted $13,000. Auto mechanics and diesel mechanics each receive $12,000.
Business, BCIS, criminal justice, dance and welding are each allocated $11,000. Band and choir are each given 10,000 while nursing is given 9,500. Building trades, electronics and journalism are each allotted $7,000.
