Thespians open with theatrical classic

Three Musketeers is a delectable candy bar with a gleaming silver and red wrapper, right? Not today, Three Musketeers will be the first College of Eastern Utah play of the season set to open September 21-23, 25 and 26 in the Geary Theater at 7:30 p.m.
The story begins with the country boy, D’Artagnan, who wants to join the ranks of the musketeers traveling to Paris. When the young man arrives in Paris with the wish to enlist with the King’s loyal Musketeers, he finds himself challenged to three duels in the first afternoon in the city by men who turn out to be Porthos, Aramis and Athos – the Three Inseparable Musketeers. Instead of fighting against them, the twists of fate have D’Artagnan battling for them against the evil Cardinal Richelieu’s guards.
After demonstrating his worth with a sword, D’Artagnan proves more of his mettle by journeying to England to foil a plot to embarrass France’s Queen Anne, the former Anne of Austria. D’Artagnan saves his queen but loses the woman he loves, so he seeks vengeance and, in turn, instills himself firmly in the ranks of the Musketeers.
The action takes place in the 1620s at the court of Louis XIII, where the Musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, with their fourth companion, the headstrong D’Artagnan, are pitted against Richelieu, the king’s scheming minister, and the beautiful, unscrupulous spy, Milady de Winter.
Many talented students head this play. Dr. Corey Ewan, who directs the play, said “We’ve got both experienced and inexperienced actors in this play and they’re coming together nicely.” D’Artagnan will be played by Mike Mutchler. The Musketeers Porthos, Aramis and Athos will be played by Bo Brady, Chandler Durrant and Gordon Dunn. Anne De Breuil, Lady Clarick or Milady will be played by Kylee Bird.
Ewan added, ” I directed the show back in 1996 and it was a lot of fun. I played Richelieu. When I went back and watched my tapes, it was just so much fun, I decided this was the play we had to do this year.”
The Three Musketeers should be quite the spectacle. There will be a fight choreographer coming in to choreograph the sword fights and hand-to-hand combat and a designer will be making all the costumes. Ewan says to “expect fun.”
