Wednesday, March 1, marks TRIO Day at College of Eastern Utah. Students from CEU’s two TRIO programs, Educational Opportunity Center and Student Support Services, plan to show their appreciation and support through an open house on campus.
The open house will take place from 11 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., in the multi-purpose room of the JLSC. Student Support Services Director, Tracie Noyes said students and staff will have an opportunity to learn about both programs, eat treats, chat with staff and have an opportunity to be entered to win several prizes including a $100 gift certificate to the bookstore.
TRIO programs are designed to identify promising students, prepare them to do college-level work and offer support services to students once they reach campus. Congress established the TRIO programs more than 30 years ago to enable Americans – regardless of economic circumstance, race or ethnic background – to successfully enter college and graduate.
The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) helps low-income, first-generation and under-represented college students prepare to go back to school or enter a post-secondary program for the first time. This includes assistance with admissions applications, financial aid applications, budgeting, scholarship searches and career testing. In 2005, the EOC helped 112 students enroll in college.
Student Support Services (SSS) serves 160 students at CEU, providing academic advising and counseling, financial aid assistance and tutoring to low-income, first generation, disabled students.
