ASCEU officers chosen for ’07-’08 academic year

The 2007-08 executive leadership at the College of Eastern Utah was elected on April 5, 2007 by students. About 10 percent of students voted for their future leaders with Emilie Dunn of Price voted as student body president, Aaron Atwood of Price as executive vice president, Carol Thompson of Clinton as activities vice president, Emily Mcrae of Tooele as ICC vice president and Nick Deeter of Price as vice resident of the academic senate.
According to Dunn, when a person runs for a position of leadership, they obtain many extra responsibilities that they must understand and control. People elected into a leadership position are placed with many trials that may be hard for the average person to overcome, let alone handle with so much finesse. Once elected into their positions, students must devote most of their personal time to help create a better atmosphere for students at CEU. Along with an overwhelming devotion of personal time; students receive a massive amount of stress dealing with personal issues, school, work and their responsibility to create a better atmosphere for CEU; all while keeping a smile on their face
Although there may be some difficulties to endure when elected into student government, the positive ones seem to prevail such as being aware of what is happening, having their voice expressed and to be heard, and the feeling of respect, but the one that seems to stand out most for individuals is being able to actually make a difference in the lives of students and citizens of our community, she said.
The newly elected leadership of CEU has many ideas of how to create a better atmosphere for students at CEU, one of which is integrating CEU into the community. CEU has always played a positive role in the local communities of Carbon and Emery County, and wish to expound on that. Helping with activities organized by the community, getting involved with community issues, and informing the community that CEU is here for them are some ways in which they hope to strengthen the relationship between our local community and CEU, Dunn continued.
CEU has also involved themselves with the community by helping local residents with their issues, no matter how serious. Carbon and Emery counties are plagued with a high rate of drug and alcohol abuse along with the high rate of teen pregnancy, which makes it hard for some residents to find help with these issues. CEU s health and wellness center offers students as well as residents help with these serious concerns, as well as many others by providing contraceptives, a health clinic, information and professional advice, she said.
President Dunn thinks that it is important for the students and for the community to be aware of these services. One way that this will be achieved is by better communication, making sure that everyone is informed of what CEU has to offer to the community.
The role of a leader whether it be in a small institution or the leader of a country is to listen and justly express the views of the people that you are chosen to represent, not a selected few but everyone, she said.
Dunn said the main goal for ASCEU is to involve, inform, and represent the student body and have an awesome time while doing it. However, the only way that ASCEU will be able to successfully complete their leadership role is for all students to voice their views and opinions. Students are responsible for informing the student body of what is wrong with CEU, and the student body officers are responsible for creating an improved institution based on the student’s views.
The newly elected leadership at CEU is determined to represent the students fairly, and create a more desirable learning atmosphere. Although some students may see college as a chance to reform their social life with activities and parties, there are some students who yearn for the educational aspect that college has to offer. It seems as if the only way to obtain a successful college atmosphere that appeals to all is to create a perfect balance between education and entertainment that will allow students to enjoy their education, and that is exactly what the newly elected student body officers plan to create, she said.
