Tryouts are something that most players dread, with all the stress of whether they will make the team, or if they will get to play a lot that year. Tryouts also give the coach an idea of what the team will be like when the season starts.
For tryouts, Head Baseball Coach Scott Madsen had the Eagles play Salt Lake Community College Bruins on Sept. 8 in Price. The Eagles played an overall good ball game, but just couldn’t get the bats going in either of the two games. The good part that came out of this game is that Madsen got to see his players, including a lot of his pitchers.
The pitchers did pitch a good two games but with no run support couldn’t do anything about it. “The pitchers did better than expected, I really challenged them to throw strikes and they came through,” Madsen said.
The Eagles lost both of the games against SLCC, but did show promise throughout the game. CEU played some good defense including some great plays made by Pete Mirabile at third and Tyler Tuft, a transfer athlete from SLCC, at second. Tuft also went two for three with a walk.
The Eagles continue their pre-season games against Colorado Northwestern Community College on Sep. 22 in Price.
“We made a lot of mistakes because of our inexperience, but I am very pleased with how far we are only two weeks into the pre-season,” Madsen said.
