Through recent months, since I’ve moved back on campus, I’ve noticed a steady decline in the amount of problems being fixed in the dorms. The springs in my, and many other students’, mattresses are sticking out and in the case of one close friend of mine, causing injury. He now has a scar on his right hand from a rogue spring on his mattress.
Along with the mattress issue my apartment has a plethora of other problems. The closet door has fallen off of its track, being both an annoyance, as it is constantly in the way of my broken dresser drawers, but it also has completely ceased to serve any useful purpose.
The West bathroom toilet has been leaking since the beginning of the semester. It has been mentioned to both RA’s and the Head Resident, and yet nothing has been done to fix this leak which is causing serious water damage.
The Head Resident, and also the RA’s have been nothing but helpful, so I don’t know where the problem has been in getting these minor repairs to my apartment, which costs roughly $1,000 a month after taking the number of people and how much they pay per semester into account.
This has become a problem not just of disrespect for the students and their living conditions, but it is also becoming a health risk. I am aware of people in sessions as well that have stories that make my apartment look like the Taj Mahal, though I am envious of the friendship one friend has developed with his new pet Clyde, the cockroach. The on campus living conditions are truly ridiculous, something, if not everything, needs to change.
