Miss CEU preliminary to Miss Utah, Miss America
After many years of not hosting a Miss CEU pageant, Dean of Students DEl Beatty is resurrecting the event.
With over 30 females having attended the first pageant meeting on Jan. 14, Beatty has three weeks to put together the pageant, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9.
He uses the Miss America judging format with talent (35%), private interview (25%), evening wear (20%), on-stage interview (10%), and swimsuit (10%).
The committee has yet to decide on whether they will have a swimsuit segment. If they decide against it and substitute, the winner would not be sent to the Miss Utah pageant.

In the past, when Beatty had done the Miss SUU pageant, six of the winners were first-time pageant competitors. When these women participated in the Miss Utah pageant they all placed in the top 10 the year they went.
During the first meeting, Beatty continually said, I’m not looking for barbie, “I want real girls.” He had a no experience necessary idea, and continually gave out the facts: Barbie doesn’t win and if you don’t have personality before the pagent, you won’t have it after.
The reigning Miss Utah, Jill Stevens was a first time competitor when she won Miss SUU. She now competes in the Miss America pageant representing the state. Beatty is optimistic about Miss Utah having a chance at capturing the Miss America title.
