The College of Eastern Utah men wanted to keep up their good conference season record, but had to go through a tough Salt Lake Community College, rival Snow College and Colorado Northwestern Community College to keep it. CEU won two out of three and jumped to third in the Scentic West Athletic Conference.
SLCC Bruins
The men coninued their grueling conference schedule against number five in the nation, Salt Lake Community College Bruins. SLCC came out showing why they are ranked as high, shooting 61 percent from the field on 16-26 shooting. They held CEU to only 5-18 shooting and 27 percent. CEU made only one shot from behind the arc and missed seven, while the Bruins made 8-10. CEU did win the battle at the free-throw line, going 12-20 compared to SlCC’s 5-10.
Going into halftime, the score was 45-23 in favor of Salt Lake. In the second half, CEU came out shooting a better percentage from the field, going 11-23 and 47 percent. CEU had no problems going to the line getting 28 and converting on 17. They did, however, get out rebounded by 10. The final score of the game was 83-64 in favor of the Bruins. Darington Hobson led the team in scoring with 19 points and hit 10-15 from the line. Felix Caspari also broke double figures with 12 points and four boards. Also scoring big for CEU was Stephan Franklin with 10 points.
Snow College Badgers
After the miserable loss to SLCC the day before, CEU had to do one of the hardest things ever in sports – put the last day behind them and focus on this game. It was not hard to focus against rival Snow College Badgers from Ephraim. This was a close game most of the way as each team took the lead. Snow came out shooting 53 percent from the field but EU kept up, shooting 45 percent. CEU made five threes in the first half which helped them take the early lead at half 40-37.
Going into the second half, the game stayed tight with both teams shooting 55 percent from the field on 15-27. Free-throws were huge in this game with CEU making 17-24. CEU came with the win 84-78. Four players from CEU scored in double figures. Hobson came out ready to play in this contest scoring 27 points and 8 boards. Caspari scored 16, Franklin scored 11 and Steve Goodell scored 10.
CNCC Spartans
After their huge win against Snow the week before, CEU played the following weekend against the cellar dwellers, Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans. CNCC had not won a conference game this year and CEU didn’t want to be their first win. CEU started the game scoring points and making 21-35 from the field and 5-11 from behind the arc. Going into the half CEU had a comfortable 49-36 lead.
Coming out from the half CEU kept up the defense holding CNCC to only 28 percent from the field as they went 16-32 for 50 percent. EU ended up with a comfortable win over the Spartans with a final score of 87-69. Hobson again lead the charge for CEU scoring 21 points and getting a double double with 14 boards. Caspari also had 12 points and 9 rebounds, one shy of a double double. Every CEU player scored helping CEU jump to 3-2 in the conference.
