“By the pricking of my thumb, something wicked this way comes.” This sums up the feelings that Jenny Cawley and Allison Guy evoke as people see them coming. While this may seem like a harsh, and rather uncalled for, way of describing someone, a closer examination reveals that wickedness, much like truth is in the eye of the beholder.
The definition of “wicked” as we commonly perceive it is not always accurate. For example: every American reveres and honors the United States GI, while terrorist groups despise him. And these women, while impish and mischievous, are kind and generous, giving their time and services to the same community in which they lovingly wreak havoc.
Jenny Cawley is in charge of Newborns in Need, a project designed to help newborns at Primary Children’s Medical Center. The group makes quilts and blankets for newborn babies with problems, providing them with a souvenir that they can carry with them the rest of their lives.
A huge fan of the Broadway stage, Cawley is addicted to “Wicked,” a musical retelling of Frank Baum’s classic The Wizard of Oz. The story is retold from the perspective of the wicked witch, proving that wickedness is, in fact, in the eye of the beholder.
Allison Guy is also rather mischievous, enjoying the occasional foray into the darker side of life. One of her favorite past times is pranking others, and, often teaming up with Cawley, enjoys poking fun at others in a sarcastic, yet jovial way.
Guy is a volunteer at the Family Support and Children’s Justice Center. The center provides childcare in case of family emergency, medical appointments, legal appointments, etc. It also serves as a transitional home for children waiting for placement in a foster care home. Volunteers play with children and do some light cleaning.
So, long story short, don’t make a final judgement until you know the whole story. Sometimes, though your thumb pricks, and your hair stands on end, that wicked thing may not be so bad after all. Maybe we should all be just a little more wicked.
