Letter to the editor

I believe there is a valid reason why CEU enrollment has gone down and is now the college with fewest students in the state. The downturn in FTE enrollment was quoted to be up 1.6 percent on the first day of school.
However, final results indicate a 1.68 percent decrease in enrollment (32 students). That means that between the first day of class and the time the study was taken, CEU dropped approximately 61 students. Why would so many students drop school?
The reasons a student would drop out of college can most likely be traced to the students or the teachers.

Perhaps today’s CEU students really are dumber than the students of yesterday were. CEU used to have an honor hall. Putting great minds in the same general location in crucial for a school’s development.
People tend to want to be with other people like themselves. If you put a lot of smart people together, they will bring more smart people with them the next year. This will increase the prestige of the college as well as enrollment. If you mix the honor students with normal students, you attract average students.
But attracting honor students is not enough. Honor teachers must be brought in as well.
There are definitely some faculty members I would never take classes from. The reasons vary. Some teachers simply don’t know what they’re talking about, or are incapable of expressing what they know to other people.
Other teachers are so unfriendly that no students dare ask them questions. Still other teachers are friendly, but require so much busywork that the three credits their class is worth, isn’t worth the homework load.
Many times, when students see a failing grade, they drop the course. Who can blame them?
If this college is going to survive, there need to be some major changes, and I’m not talking about construction. Reinstitute the honor hall and make necessary changes in faculty. If no changes are made, the downward trend in enrollment will continue until CEU is gone forever.
