Do you have all the boring classes this semester, or need to register for a class to get you outdoors? If so, the Carbon County Recreation Center may be your solution.
Who would have imagined that you could play paintball for credit? CEU’s Continuing Education Classes have been posted for the spring of 2009. It is not too late to sign up for many of the classes. If you would rather have a one- or two-day weekend adventure, the recreation center may offer something you would like to do. In addition to the classes offered, regular adventure outings are also available. Adventure activities range from snowshoe outings to the weekly wall climbing.
Frank Ori, assistant director of recreation at the center, recommended that students at CEU take or participate in the CPR classes as well as the full-moon snowshoe outing. Steve Christensen, coordinator of outdoor programs at the recreation center, stated “Carbon Rec will be holding an avalanche awareness workshop … Friday will be a classroom session at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Room.” and those wishing to attend can call 636-3702. Also, these activities are not limited to students and faculty.
Upcoming events include a snowshoe outing on Jan. 17, ice skating party on Jan. 31, first responder training on Feb. 16, cross country ski outing on Feb. 28, umpire clinic on March 4, backpack trip on March 7-8, rock climbing workshop on April 3-4 and safety on the river May 16. To see a full list of activities offered at the center you can find a copy of the Carbon Leisure publication at the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center.
In addition of the many classes offered at the recreation center, the staff can plan activities for students. This is useful when you cannot find an activity that catches your attention or you would like an event on a different date. There are certain requirements, however, in order to plan an outing, there are no universal requirements, so give the center a call. They also have equipment to rent like ice skates, show shoes, canoes, etc.
To register for a class or talk to someone to plan an outing, you can call the recreation center at 636-3702.
