“Thank you to everyone who did service and to everyone sacrificed their time to do good,” Cole Unsworth, president of the Serving Utah Network Involvement Center, said.
The semester is coming to an end, but there is still a lot of service to be had for anyone.
People at the SUN Center need help for a Nine-Mile Canyon cleanup project April 17. Students meet at the SUN Center at 8 a.m. to get a ride to the site. Students can also meet at the kiosk at Walker’s Gas Station in Wellington to go to the service site, according to Kathy Murray, director of the SUN Center and advisor to the SUN Center leaders.
On April 30, Leaders at the SUN Center need help serving a banquet.
To volunteer, Unsworth said, it is “simple, just come to the office and see what is going on. You can’t not come up here and not get recruited for service.”
Unsworth says that he wished that he could have “contacted more volunteers and have been more in touch with the student body … [he] also feel[s] like [he] could have got more people involved with service.”
“We weren’t able to meet our goal of getting every student involved in service. But we still had a lot of volunteers,” Murray said.
Students with the service-learning class can continue to finish hours for credit, Murray added.
Unsworth recommends giving service because it “gives you a sense of accomplishment, we’re all looking for some sort of self-recognition.”
Unsworth’s and Murray’s favorite activity this year was Spring Breakaway.
Students can apply to be student leaders until the end of the year at the SUN Center. To apply for president of the SUN Center, students need to turn in their applications by April 17.
“I loved serving as the SUN Center president and there are great people on this campus. I will never forget them and I had a great year and hope that the spirit of service continues. And I’m still single,” Unsworth smiled.
