The first Mister Utah competition had eleven men competing, including two USU Eastern students: Ranhard Corcino and Jaun Jarlin De Leon. Both found out about the competition through their friend Yakshinee Boodoo who competed in the Miss Africa Utah Pageant spring semester.
The Mister Utah Competition was held Nov. 8, at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake. The judges were Miss Utah, Angelia Layton; Miss Belleza Latina, Sandy Aguirre; model and manager of Mister USA, Jonny Mosqueda; and event planner, Mara Marian. Mister USA attended the competition along with 100 other guests.
The competition had three parts: the unhinged runway show, the swimwear competition and the formal-wear show. Mrs. Utah America, Mckenna Brown and Troy Thompson hosted the event.
Corcino and De Leon were all smiles before the event started. De Leon said, “I’m excited for the competition. I’ve learned many things from this whole experience; how to walk, and how to carry myself confidently. I’m happy to be a part of this whole thing. We’ve been getting ready for it for five weeks, so I think we are all ready for tonight.”
Corcino said, “I’m nervous, but excited, we’ve all worked hard for tonight.” Both Corcino and De Leon did great in the competition, however neither made it to the top five. Corcino won the People’s Choice Award. He received a trophy and stood with the first runner up Nicholas Snow and the first Mister Utah Berlis Rosario for interviews and pictures.
After the competition De Leon said, “I’m so thankful I got to be a part of this amazing event. I met so many great people and learned some great things from this whole thing.”
Corcino said, “It feels amazing to be People’s Choice. I can’t believe how many people voted for me and supported me. This is a blessing, and, of course, without God, none of this would be possible. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.” The Mister Utah competition is one Jessica Swick, coordinator of the event; wants to continue. The winner, Rosario, will compete in Mister USA next year.
