Inaugural Spirit Week set for next week

For the first time ever, USU Eastern hosts its inaugural Spirit Weekend starting Thursday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 1.
Student leader groups and departments on campus planned activities to increase school spirit and have a good time. Jeff Spears, director of residence life said, “This is a chance to come out and support our athletic department. The fall sports will be in full swing and we will provide some fun activities to entertain the student body.”
On Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. the activities take place by the fountain including: inflatables, a dunk tank, henna tattoos and kickball. Students are encouraged to attend the whole event or stop by between classes.
The fun continues on Sept. 30 with a spirit competition at the mens soccer game at 4:30 p.m. Evette Allen, director of student life, said, “When we first visualized Spirit Weekend, we wanted something to energize students. The purpose of the spirit contest is to give students incentive to show their school spirit.
“When students are excited about the games, it makes a huge difference for both their game experience and the experience of the athletes who are on the field or court. We hope the spirit competition inspires our students to get out there and really show their school spirit.
“We also hope that the spirit doesn’t stop with spirit weekend. Spirit Weekend is just the beginning. We encourage students to continue to support the athletic teams and show Eagle pride throughout the year.”
This is a chance for students to show their school spirit and the college why they deserve to be the ultimate fan. The women’s soccer game is at 2 p.m. followed by volleyball at 7 p.m.
The other semi-final for the spirit competition will be on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. for volleyball. Women’s soccer will also play at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the men.
The winners from the semi-finals will have their picture taken and students can vote for the winner at Mr. USU Eastern at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. This Spirit Weekend is important to establish a new tradition at Eastern.
Spears added, “We are constantly adding new activities for students to look forward to each year. These programs are important for students to bond and enjoy the college experience.”
