Meet Abigail Hatch, an exuberant spirit from Driggs, Idaho. In her freshman year at Utah State University Eastern, she is majoring in elementary education. Hatch hopes to become a first- or second-grade teacher and to go to USU in Logan after the next school year.
She is happy to begin her college education at a smaller campus. ā€œI didn’t want to go to a huge campus and be lost in a sea. I wanted to be able to feel like I had a place somewhere, and at Eastern I feel that way,ā€ Hatch said.
She found Eastern through the ambassador program. ā€œI wanted to be an ambassador on the Logan campus and noticed there was a different campus in Price so the ambassador program brought me here,ā€ she said. Wanting to start small, and not overwhelm herself, by coming to Price was a smart choice. Driggs, Idaho has a population of 1,700 people, while Price has a population of over 8,000 and Logan has about 50,000 people.
ā€œPrice is a lot bigger than Driggs. It’s been fun to come to a bigger town and get to experience a little bit of the city life even though it’s not city life at all,ā€ she said. Hatch said she enjoys being around well-known stores such as McDonald’s and Walmart.
At USU Eastern, she’s looks forward to developing new relationships on campus. ā€œIt is a small campus and it’s easy to get to know everyone or at least mostly everyone,ā€ Hatch said.
Hatch is proud to be a first-generation-college student and sees this as one of her proudest achievements. She is proud to set an example to her younger sisters. A goal she has is to be a genuinely good person and to love everyone around her.
Someone she looks up to is her mom, ā€œShe is so caring and loving. I know that is so clichĆ© to say, but my mom is my rock and I love her to death. I can tell her anything and I want to be that for other people,ā€ Hatch said.
Hatch says it has been tough being six hours away from home and her family, but feels as if she has a family amongst her roommates to make it through.
One of her guilty pleasures is watching videos of babies. Her favorite pastime is watching funny vines of children, ā€œEveryone thinks I’m so weird for doing it, but I love it and I just think they are funny.ā€
With the holiday season approaching, she is planning on being a deer for Halloween and wants to go all out in her costume. You can find her on instagram @abigail.hatch
