If you are reading this, odds are, you are a college student. Congratulations, this means you know what it’s like to be scrapped for cash and not have enough money to put towards nice things, or hobbies, such as video games. If you play video games and need a new game to play, you’re probably disheartened by all the new releases. After all, a new game typically costs $60 and that’s a lot of money.
I’m here to give you a list of games you can get for cheap, if not free, that won’t attempt to gouge you for more money, while getting dozens of hours of gameplay out of it at the same time. The games will be ordered in cheapest to most expensive, ending at $25. Get your game on people.
Warframe (Free): A paragon of the free-to-play genre of games, Warframe’s tagline is Ninjas play free. This game made by Digital Extremes is all about the players, called Tenno. It’s a third person shooter MMORPG, which will consume your time and soul if you’re not careful. It has a massive variety of weapons and characters, known as Warframes, to choose from.
While yes, you’ll have to grind to get new characters and weapons, you don’t have to pay a penny for any of them. It’s just a matter of time until you have everything, be it a weapon, character or cosmetic. If that sounds like your cup of tea, the Tenno will happily welcome you to the community on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One or PS4. Maybe contribute to it in the Nexus if you have a chance.
Fortnite (Free): If you haven’t heard of Fortnite, I envy you and sincerely apologize for infecting you. This game is EVERYWHERE, and has invaded pop culture at every chance it gets. The gameplay concept is simple: 100 players are dropped onto a large playing area and told to fight to be the last person standing. Find weapons, collect materials to build bases in the environment and fight your fellow player to the death to take the Victory Royale.
This doesn’t sound like something that would invade pop culture, right? Wrong. This game has taken off, with people copying the dance emotes, people everywhere playing on a daily basis and enjoying the base concept of the game so much, they forget Fortnite was orgininally a Zombie Survival game.
Be warned, if you want to get cosmetics, the only unlockables in the game, be prepared to pay money. A lot of it. The game is concstantly being played and updated, so you won’t be running out of content any time soon. You can find it on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Garry’s Mod ($10): The infamous sandbox has been around since 2006. Garry’s Mod, otherwise known as Gmod, was made by Facepunch Studios, and started as a mod for the game Half-Life 2. Running on Valve’s Source Engine, this game is incredibly Modder firnedly and to this day people are still making new game modes for it, such as the recently released Jazztronauts. You can mess around in GMod for hundreds of hours and still find new things to do. There’s no DLC to be bought, no micro transactions, just dumb fun that you can have with strangers, or friends alike. A must have for any PC gamer’s library.
Enter the Gungeon ($15): Created by Dodge Roll, Enter the Gungeon is a game that hates you. It hates you, it hates everything you stand for and you will die. Repeatedly. But that’s part of the gun. Enter the Gungeon is a gun-based Roguelike. In this game you can expect gun puns, dodge rolls, a desperate need to find that LAST COIN FOR THE SHOP, co-op play with a friend and five randomly generated levels og pure agony. So, hey, why not? Enter the Gungeon, slay the Dragun, no that’s not a spelling error, all in a desperate attempt to find the “Gun to kill the Past.” Just watch out for the “Resourceful Rat”, he’ll rob you blind. Enter the Gungeon is on PS4, Switch, Xbox One and PC.
Darkest Dungeon ($25): There are many secrets about the world that are not menat to be uncovered. Secrets the human mind isn’t built to comprehend. This is a concept that was first put forward by H.P. Lovecraft and Darkest Dungeon Explores that concept.
Take your own adventurers into the depths of the Darkest Dungeon and watch them go mad due to stress and a desperate fight to stay alive. Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer and this game will remind you of that every step of the way. But hey, the narrator’s voice is amazing, so that counts for something right? The Darkest Dungeon awaits on PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and… PS Vita?!
So, if you’re looking for a game that won’t break the bank if you plan to get them this semester. Games are supposed to be fun after all, and if you are stressing over your wallet when getting them, that’s the worst thing a game can go through. And of course, some of these games may not be for you. That’s perfectly fine. You have different tastes from me and there will be some cheap game out there for you. There are hundreds of cheap games; just go looking.
