Dr. Suess’ controversy erupts
In case you missed it, there’s been a lot of controversy recently surrounding the publishing company in charge of Dr. Seuss’ estate.
The group decided to stop publishing six of Seuss’ books because the content is perceived to be racially biased.
You’d think this was no big deal right? Dr. Suess published hundreds of books during his career as an author. He made some of the most iconic children’s imagery in history.
Some people have taken to the Internet to voice their displeasure of the situation. They are trying to claim Theodor Geisel is being “cancelled” for writing and creating these books. It may seem that way, but it’s important to realize that is not the case.
Seuss has been dead many years, he was born in 1904. A lot of what he wrote resonated through generations.
“The Grinch” is a staple of the Christmas season and you would be hard pressed to find a living person who doesn’t know the story of “The Cat in the Hat.”
Some of his other stories may seem fitting at the time they were written and published. The world changed drastically in the last 100 years.
This isn’t a cancellation of Dr. Seuss, they aren’t recalling these books from stores or forcing people to burn their copies. It’s simply time to take these old books out of the printing circulation.
You will still be able to go to your local bookstore or box store to buy the classics with no problem. They won’t be requesting proof of ID for purchase or putting you on a watch list for reading about “Sam-I-Am.”
The world is not ending and your childhood is not being violently ripped away from you. It’s only six books that have seen their last print.
There’s no need to panic. Everything will be all right.
