Eagles go 3-2 over five game span

The USU Eastern women’s basketball team won three of the last five games to boost their record to 13-13 and 9-7 in conference play.

The USU Eastern women’s basketball team won three of the last five games to boost their record to 13-13 and 9-7 in conference play.

They were set to finish the regular season as The Eagle newspaper went to press with road games Tuesday and Thursday against Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely. The Eagles defeated the Spartans 98-88 at home near the start of the season in December.

Their most recent victory was 75-60 over College of Southern Nevada. That came on the heels of a loss to College of Southern Idaho and a split with Salt Lake Community College.

Ella Bradley and Kinlee Toomer led the Eagles in scoring over the past five games. Bradley averaged 15.4 points while Toomer contributed 13.2 points per game.

A common factor in the two losses for the Eagles was the lack of team scoring as Bradley and Toomer struggled to score points or receive support from other players on the team. On the contrary, in the three wins, the Eagles were able to make outside shots, and Bradley and Toomer had their fair share of scoring in all three games.

“Considering the tough stretch we were faced with, I am very proud of the way our girls played,” Eagles coach Chelsey Warburton said. “We aren’t finished with this season. There are still games we have to win so that we can solidify our spot in the conference tournament, but more importantly, we are looking to gain momentum leading up to the tournament in Salt Lake.”

The Region 18 Conference Tournament will being Feb. 24 as Salt Lake Community College plays host. The National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament will begin March 14.

“We have a tough task ahead of us if we want to win the conference tournament,” Warburton said. “We have beaten every team in our conference at least once this season, so we know that we are capable of going on a run and winning the conference tournament.”
