The USUE theater team presents Thomas F. Rogers’s play “Hübener” February 17-19 and February 24-26. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theater in the CIB.
The World War II drama is based on the true story of Helmuth Hübener (Hel-Moot HUE-ben-er), a 17-year-old LDS boy who lived in 1942 Germany. With the Nazis running rampant in Europe and Hitler attempting world domination, Hübener rallies three other boys to spread anti-Nazi propaganda in hopes to stop the war.
Utah State University Eastern freshman Matthew Milligan stars as Hübener; freshman Jasper Edwards as Karl-Heinz Schnibbe (Shn-ib-ah); freshman Duncan Clark as Rudi Wobbe (Voe-bah); and high school sophomore Cooper Innes as Jonni Düwer (YOH-nee DOO-vair).
The show is wonderfully written, and inspires hope in uncertain times. The department also welcomes to the show the playwright Rogers, and the great-grandaughter of one of the brave boy. Tickets will be sold online or at the ticket table in the CIB.
As a precursor to the play, here is an exerpt from the first act:
…“‘Where is Rudolf Hess? Where is Hitler’s Deputy Minister, who was last seen in public in May of this year? It can now be revealed! … If you don’t believe this, then ask the Fuehrer to produce his Minister.…’”
