On Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale Arizona, what could have been one of the best Super Bowls to date, took place. The matchup featured the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. Both teams were the best team out of their respective divisions and prepared for an all-out brawl. The two teams were as equal as could be, finishing the year with the same record, same number of points scored, and the same amount of All-Pro selections. The matchup forced a split-home for the Kelce family, as both the Eagles and Chiefs roster a Kelce brother.
On the opening drive of the game, the Eagles marched down into Chief territory and put up the first touchdown of the game. On the following drive, the Chiefs decided to get on the board themselves with a touchdown to Travis Kelce. The stage was set for an absolute shootout. Although, on the first play of the second quarter, Jalen Hurts hit AJ Brown with a deep ball to lead by seven. Following that, Philadelphia’s defense got a stop on the next drive. The Eagles had the chance to extend their lead. Instead, Jalen Hurts fumbled and Kansas City returned it for a touchdown to tie up the game. The Eagles ended up outscoring the Chiefs in the second quarter 17-7 to take a 24-14 lead into the half.
Following the first half of football, Rihanna put on an amazing halftime show for everyone in the world. All while being pregnant with another child! Many laughable commercials were featured to make fans laugh.
In the second half of the game, the tables seemed to turn a little bit. Kansas City applied pressure quickly and effectively. After 14 unanswered points, and a score of 35-27 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles snuck into the end zone and converted a two-point play to knot the game up at 35-35 with just five minutes remaining. On the last drive of the game, the Chiefs had it in Philadelphia territory on third down and eight, when a very controversial defensive holding penalty was called to ultimately give Kansas City an automatic first down and the ability to wind down the clock. The Chiefs settled for a very anticlimactic game winning field goal. The Kansas City Chiefs, once again, were the Super Bowl champions.
Some notable Utah alumni participated in Superbowl 57. Including Andy Reid, head coach of the Chiefs. He played college football at Brigham Young University. Brian Johnson, the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles, played quarterback for the University of Utah, and then later coached for the Utes. Utah Utes fan favorite Britain Covey, a Utah native out of Timpview High School and former Ute, is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
