D&D movie preview from a D&D fan

The creators of the movie worked closely with Wizard of the Coast, the company behind the original game, to make the lore and creatures as accurate as possible. I’m excited to see the creatures, races, and everything in between come to life from the game.

Honor Among Thieves opened in March 2023

Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released March 3. The movie is about a thief and a group of other adventurers who go on a quest to find a relic. Along this quest are different dangerous encounters like you’d expect from any action adventure movie.

This isn’t the first D&D movie, but I have a feeling it’s going to be the best one. The directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, are two incredibly talented men who have worked on other famous movies together like Spider-Man: Homecoming. From the directors alone, I don’t expect the movie to be anything less than brilliant.

Most D&D fans have been waiting since December 5, when they released behind-the-scenes clips and the official poster for the movie. After waiting three months for the movie to be released, fans have had to wait an additional month for it to be released in theaters near them because it didn’t hit a lot of theaters at once. Most avid players, like myself, are waiting to see the movie with their D&D party, so fitting everyone’s schedules together prolongs it more.

Fans and even movie critics have been hyping up how good the movie is since it was released. When I first saw the poster for it, I wasn’t super thrilled because it looked like a wannabe Avenger movie. But from released clips and the trailer, you can tell that scenes from the movies are pulled directly from D&D campaigns.

Seeing some of the creatures they featured in the trailers made me even more excited to see it. At one point they show the appearance of an Owlbear–which true D&D fans recognize the deadly creature from the game–but a lot of us “nerds” also recognize from World of Warcraft. Not only are they including creatures, but subterranean settings, races, and cities exclusive to the game as well.

In addition to all these exclusives that I was dubious about the movie portraying and doing so well, watching the trailer I could pull out specific spells that these characters were using based on the visual effects.

Other than just including the spells, creatures, and all that, they captured so much of what goes into a campaign. There’s many quotes that players can relate to an actual session, and the thought processes and actions of the players are very real to the game. Seeing that in the trailer is enough for me to feel the need to watch it. Although there have been so many things that make me excited to see this movie, they keep enough hidden so that at the same time I have no idea what to expect.
