Unfortunately, Hovland and Koepka did not have their games intact and it cost them big time. John Rahm finished this year’s tournament with the jacket being awarded to him after finishing the tournament -12 par. The green jacket was presented to him by Scottie Scheffler who was the 2022 champion in Augusta.
The best time of the year is approaching us and doing so quickly. The weather is warming up, the birds are chirping and there is golf to be played until the end of the summer. The Professional Golf Association, or PGA, tour is one of the largest viewed sports in the world and it is only growing from here. One tournament, in particular, seems to catch everybody’s eye. The Masters.
The Masters was established in 1933 in Augusta, Georgia. They have been playing each and every year since will all of them coming out with a champion. Part of the significance of participating in, and winning, the Masters is in the infamous green jacket. Without a green jacket, a golfer’s legacy isn’t truly seen as fulfilled in the world of golf.
Going into the first day of play, everyone had their favorites, and everyone had their hopes. From that point on, only time would tell who’s going home with the beautiful green blazer.
This year’s tournament had a slight twist to it. Recently, a new golf league by the name of LIV has been formed. To make a long story short, they cherrypicked PGA players and offered them guaranteed money over commission by the win. This caused a huge deal, and most people were under the impression that all LIV players were going to be banned from PGA events. With that being said, a lot of people do not understand the fact that the Masters actually is not technically claimed under the PGA tour, so their representatives decided to allow all players to play. Now the stage is really set, LIV vs. PGA in the biggest tournament of the year.
After the first round, John Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Brooks Koepka were tied for the lead after posting a strong 65. After that, the rain started to come down and it simply changed everything. From there on out the entire tournament was up and down. After the second round, Koepka built a two-stroke lead over Rahm, heading into the cut. All the meanwhile, Sam Bennett is giving his fight for a top five look as just an amateur. After an interesting set of delays and postponements for the second and third rounds, tensions were high going into the final round. Phil Mickelson thought it would be a great day to keep everyone on their toes while he posted a late 65 for himself that took him all the way up to second place.
