Softball goes 4-4 in last eight conference games

USUE vs CNCC, W 8-0

USU Eastern opened the weekend series against Colorado Northwestern Community College with an 8-0 win. USUE got on the board in the bottom of the first with Maddy Jennings and Brooklyn Gramse both grounding out and both knocking in one run and Cindy Martinez followed that up with a single which also brought a runner in to score. The Lady Eagles added to their early lead after Kailey Alas singled, and Brinnley Anderson grounded out, each scoring a run. Addi Hess earned the win for USUE. She allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings of work, striking out six and walking one batter.  

USUE vs CNCC, W 17-2

Brinley Johnson was a key player in game two of the series as she hit a home run in the fourth inning, which knocked in three runs, and she also tripled, scoring one run. The Lady Eagles scored 14 runs in the fourth inning on the way to their victory. Paige Herbon singled, scoring one run, Gia Bruno singled, scoring two runs, Elissa Gibson tripled, scoring two runs, Herbon singled and knocked in one run again, and Brinley Johnson smashed a home run, which scored three runs. The CNCC defense did not play too well as in that same inning they had three errors and a catcher’s interference which all together allowed five runs to come across and score. Brinley Johnson stole the show in the circle for USUE as she walked away with the win. She gave up five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out two and walking four batters.

USUE vs CNCC, W 7-0

USUE walked away with the victory in game three over CNCC with the score of 7-0. The Lady Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Gia Bruno singled, knocking in a run, and a wild pitch allowed USUE to bring another runner across to score. USUE extended the lead in the third as Brinley Johnson doubled and Kailey Alas grounded out, each knocking in a run. The Lady Eagles racked up 12 hits as a team. Gia Bruno went 3-4, Brinley Johnson went 2-2, Micaela Resler and Paige Herbon each collected multiple hits in the game. Jenna Thorkelson earned the win for USUE. She gave up five hits and zero runs over seven innings of work, striking out three and walking one batter.

USUE vs CNCC, W 13-2

USUE defeated CNCC 13-2 in game four of the series as the Lady Eagles secured the weekend sweep. USUE scored 10 runs in the fourth inning. Brinnley Anderson doubled, scoring one run, Hadley Howell doubled, scoring one run, Paige Herbon singled, scoring two runs, Brinley Johnson homered, scoring two runs, Anderson, Howell, Resler, and Herbon all drew walks in the inning all to knock in a run. Cindy Martinez blasted a home run to get the Lady Eagles on the board in the second inning. Gia Bruno also smashed a two-run home run the very next inning to give USUE the lead back. Brinley Johnson earned the win as she gave up five hits and two runs over five innings of work, striking out five and walking two.

USUE vs SLCC, L 0-7

Coming off the sweep of CNCC, the Lady Eagles had trouble keeping up with the six ranked SLCC Bruins in game one of the four game series, as they lost 7-0. SLCC got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Bruins added two more runs in the third making the score 4-0. SLCC scored three runs in the top of the seventh from a three-run home run. Addi Hess took the loss for USUE as she went five and one-third innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits, striking out one and walking two.

USUE vs SLCC, L 9-15

Despite Maddy Jennings going 3-3 at the plate, with singles in the third, fourth, and sixth inning, USUE lost to SLCC 15-9 in game two of the four game series. The Bruins got on the board in the top of the first from a two-run home run, a solo home run, a double which scored two runs, and a single which scored a run. The Lady Eagled managed to get 12 hits and brought home nine runs to score but that was not enough to beat the number six ranked SLCC. Brinley Johnson took the loss for USUE as she went four innings, surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits, striking out none and walking three batters.

USUE vs SLCC, L 3-11

USUE came up short 11-3 against SLCC in the third game of the series. The Bruins got on the board in the top of the first inning after an error which allowed a run to score followed by a three-run home run. SLCC then scored five runs on six hits in the top of the second inning. Maddy Jennings homered in the bottom of the fourth innings bringing across the first USUE run of the game. Addi Hess took the loss for the Lady Eagles as she only lasted one inning in the contest, allowing eight runs on seven hits. Brinley Johnson came in relief as she threw four innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one.

USUE vs SLCC, L 0-7

The Lady Eagles were shut out in the final game against the number sixth ranked SLCC, 7-0. The Bruins scored first as a sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the game. They then added to their lead in the second inning as they brought home two more runs to score. Brinley Johnson started the game in the circle for USUE. She allowed three runs on four hits over only one inning. Addi Hess came on in relief and took the loss for the Lady Eagles as she went six innings and allowed four runs on three hits, striking out one and walking four batters.

Eastern  will travel to Henderson, Nevada to take on the  College of Southern Nevada before finishing the regular season hosting the College of Southern Idaho.
