Verna Lauritsen is hard to forget after working at the college 26 years, but Sharon Jones is doing a good job of filling her shoes as CEU’s new administrative assistant to the dean of students and residential life.
Some of Jones’ daily activities include scheduling the use of rooms in the JLSC and SAC buildings, dealing with rosters and applications, and making room assignments.
Jones started her career at CEU 11 years ago as a student. Her original plan was to major in elementary education and become a teacher, but after working in a preschool she “just realized that the only part of teaching that I liked was the paper work. I liked the idea of correcting papers.” Jones went back to school in 2003 to take business classes and realized that is what she enjoyed doing, “and then this job came available.” Previous to this job she was hall director of Tucker and Sessions halls where she dealt with roommate complaints. She said that the most common complaint is people eating each other’s food.
Family is an important part of Jones’ life, she loves spending time with her family. She is married and has a 6-year-old son. They like to go to movies, play games and have small get-togethers with friends. Jones loves to read, she especially enjoys the Harry Potter series. She also likes the movies, she enjoyed the fourth movie,” I went to see it the Friday it came out,” she said.
Growing up in Tremonton and graduating from Bear River High, she decided to come to CEU when Todd Olson came to her high school with the recruiters and told her she could get a scholarship. Previous to that, “I didn’t even know there was a, Price, Utah,” she said. Jones’ grew up in a family of six boys and two girls. As kids she remembers prank calling neighbors when her parents weren’t home. She was always close with her siblings, “we were each other’s best friends,” she said.
Some of her favorite things about her job are doing paper work, filing and using her computer. She’s perfect for the job because she loves the things most others find mundane and boring. She loves her job and says, “I hope to be here for a very long time.”
