Welcome back baseball

Before I officially begin my column today I would like to tell a story that has nothing to do with the rest of my column. I recently found out that my oldest brother Cory and his wife are going to have a baby. Cory is a die-hard Yankees’ fan (every family has their dark secrets). Chris my other brother sent Cory a little baby shirt that says Yankees Suck. With any luck, the sins of the father will not be passed down to the son, and my nephew will grow up a Red Sox or Dodgers’ fan. OK, now to my column.

Welcome back baseball. In my column, I am going to relive my favorite and least favorite moments of the opening week of the baseball season.
Of course the moment that brought me the most joy, was seeing the Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers two out of three games. Many questions were answered for Red Sox Nation during those games. Number one being, Curt Schilling.
He pitched seven good innings, only giving up two runs and ended the day with a 2.57 ERA. Big Papi David Ortiz continued where he left off last season, getting three hits, including one homer. The only downside in the season opener for the BoSox was when closer Keith Foulke entered the game. Foulke faltered a bit, but eventually got the final out for a 7-2 Red Sox win.
My personal second favorite moment of the opening week happened in San Diego. Barry *cough* cheater *cough* Bonds, and the rest of the San Francisco Giants took on the San Diego Padres. The highlight of this game, was when a fan threw a syringe at Bonds. That’s all I have to comment on in that game.
On the opening day of the season, Phillies star Jimmy Rollins extended his hitting streak to 37 games. When he got a hit in the bottom of the eighth, Rollins was trying to break Joe Dimagio’s 56-game hitting streak.
Now for the not so great moments of opening week. Foulke, as I mentioned earlier, struggled in the first game for the Sox. He only pitched one inning for the Red Sox but he ended the inning with an ERA of 9.00.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Foulke is struggling. He has had some serious knee injuries. ESPN writer Bill Simmons said he thinks Foulke will perform well this season.    “Considering his knees are bone on bone at this point, I’m gonna say no. Call me nuts.” I’m afraid I must agree with Simmons, but Foulke is one of the best closer’s in baseball and it would be sad to see him go.
I think one of the most disappointing things last week was seeing Rollins, who extended his hit streak on Monday, only to have it broken on Wednesday. But by far the saddest thing was the Yankees’ winning their opening day game against the Oakland A’s by a score of 15-2.
