CEU’s student athletes honored at banquet by coaches
This year’s athletic awards banquet featured College of Eastern Utah’s best athletes. It was held in the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center on April 23 and emceed by Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Dan Allen.
After a spaghetti dinner, Allen began the awards presentation by announcing the awards for the cheerleading squad. Allen was filling in for the cheer coach, April Zaccaria, who could not attend the banquet.
Azita Tizpa was recognized as the head cheerleader, most spirited was Yurika Hori, most dedicated was Ashley Babcock and the most outstanding cheerleader was Chanelle Flores.

Coach Dave Paur was next with the awards for the women’s basketball program.
Team captains were Halee Rasmussen, Bresha Smith and Jenny Fiso. The most inspirational award went to Ashley Taylor, second team All-Region; and most improved was Fiso, second team All-Region; and CEU co-MVP was Stacie Little, and first team All-Region and CEU co-MVP was Elisha Harris.
In men’s basketball, Coach Z announced the most-improved player award went to two team members, Rafael Moreira and Tony Dalton; best defensive player was Eric Dearden; best rebounder was Felix Casperi.
The spark plug award went to Steve Hassell and Jeremy Lathan. All-Region second team awards went to Lathan and Anthony Oliver. First team All-American, first team All-Region and CEU MVP went to Tyler Kepkay.
Coach Brent Martindale presented the volleyball awards. The ball control award went to Emily Doxey, the all-around point award went to Karina Rocha who was also an honorable mention All- Region selection, the offensive award went to Maren Ericson who was also selected to the second team All-Region and the Kim Brown Award went to Jamie King and Courtney Young.
A round of applause went up for all the assistant coaches: women’s basketball, Dan Allen, and Alisa Morley; men’s basketball Chris Craig and volleyball, Crystal Barraclough, Grant Barraclough, and Jared Dailey. Since the baseball team’s season is not complete their awards will be announced at a later date.
Ruth Whiteside, BDAC front desk/concessions manager; Susan Wilstead, athletic/BDAC secretary; and Carrol Beacco, ticket sales manager; also received an ovation for their excellent work.
