Professor Troy Hunt received an award of excellence from the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts in the station promo, PSA, commercial category.   Hunt received the award for a spot entitled “Student E-Mail.”
“This spot was produced to increase student awareness of the availability of campus hosted e-mail addresses,” said Hunt.   “The idea was to create something humorous yet informative.   So, I sat down and looked back at some of the funniest e-mail addresses I have had students use during my teaching career.   I incorporated these ideas, with minor changes, into the spot and had the students in the advanced radio class help produce it.”   The award-winning spot has been played on the campus radio station throughout the academic year.
The BEA Festival of Media Arts is hosted annually in association with the BEA annual convention.   Faculty members from colleges and universities from around the world submit materials in several categories to be adjudicated by broadcast professionals and academicians.   The acceptance rates to the festival are similar to those of most professional academic journals where submissions are examined by an editorial board before publication occurs.
“The competition each year is quite stiff.   My submission placed third in the overall competition and the point difference between the top three was minimal,” said Hunt.   “I am especially pleased that the spot winning the first place recognition was also selected as the best of festival in audio production for the BEA Festival.   This indicates how well the spot stood up to the work of my colleagues from across the nation.”
Hunt gives credit to the fine work done by his students in helping make the spot a reality.   “Without the creative voice work of students, the spot would not have been as effective.   It is always great to work with students and see how creative they can be.   I look forward to continuing my work with students on future projects.”
