This year’s womens volleyball squad might be inexperienced for a college team with only four sophomores, but they started on a good note in the first game against the College of Eastern Utah alumnae, with a clean sweep, the women had no problems in the win.
Team leader in this match was sophomore Olivia Fowler, who led the team with 10 kills and two errors, Fowler also had six blocks.
The freshmen really made an impact with four players having four kills. “Having that many freshmen hitters with that many kills is a good thing,” says Coach Brent Martindale. “I was pleased with most of what we did at the alumnae game. There were times that the alumnae team was out hitting us, but we were playing a more “complete” game and got the job done overall, and that’s what I am most happy with.”
In his 13th season, Coach Martindale will send out these women in an attempt to upgrade from the disappointing 7-26 season last year in which the Eagles failed to win a conference game.
The team is made up of freshmen Kristy Rindlisbacher from Riverton, Nikki Griffiths from Smithfield, Karissa Law from Hurricane, Tauna Garvin from Prescott, Ari., Amber Kohler from Midway, Courtney Rognan from Coalville, Nicole Norr from Deweyville, Marissa Crookston from Hyrum and Chloe Wilson from Bountiful. The sophomores include Kindra Romney from Providence, Olivia Fowler from Alpine, Emily Doxey from Layton and Jennie Rudder from Nampa, Idaho.
After this first win, the team will try and keep it rolling August 31 though September 1 at the Salt Lake Community College Tourney in Salt Lake. “We have a lot of work to do still. We are playing against nationally-ranked teams this weekend at the SLCC tournament, so we will need to be sharp right away. We need to serve tougher and get our offensive plays down better,” says Martindale.
Teams playing in the Salt Lake tournament include Snow, CEU, North Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, Salt Lake Community College, Hutchinson College, Illinois Central, Jefferson State, Northeastern Junior College, Pitt Community College, Western Nebraska and Yavapai Community College.
The Eagles open the tournament Friday at 9:45 a.m. against Hutchinson College at the SLCC Bruins arena.
