The New Century Scholarship was facing a serious shortfall this year due to a projected increase in the number of awards at a time when all higher education budgets were being cut. It is estimated that $1.5 million is needed in addition to the current appropriation to keep pace with the increased demand for the 2009-2010 school year. As a result, the Board of Regents was faced with the difficult choice of having to reduce the dollar amount of the awards to keep the program operating within budget.
Sederburg continued, “We look forward to working with the Governor and legislature as we explore the possible funding solutions to help sustain this critical program.”
