The CEU volleyball team wrapped up their season November 12 at the Region tournament in North Idaho. “The team played very tough,” said coach Brent Martindale, but they lost in three games to Snow, 30-23, 30-25 and 30-24.
Coach Martindale said that the team started playing better than they had been playing in recent weeks. “We practiced hard all week before the tournament.” He even said that they were leading two of the matches but ended up loosing. Martindale said that the girls had a very good start to the season but the end of the season was really tough. The girls had no reason to feel bad because they are good players and they played all season long in a tough conference without quitting. “They played their hearts out until the end, they learned a lot, and they are very good players.”
In the tournament there were two pools of teams playing, which meant that two teams got to go to nationals. Salt Lake Community College won one of the pools and Northern Idaho won the other.
College of Southern Idaho who had filed an appeal on the matter of too many international players was not allowed to play in the tournament as they lost their appeal. Since they lost their appeal they can only award two international players with scholarships for the next two years (two players each year). This came as a severe blow since they were the favorites to win the tournament.
Now that the season is over, the school looks to next year when the Eagles could possibly have seven sophomores returning. Martindale said that they were looking at a few players from Carbon High School, this year’s state champions. He said that they had talked with a few of the seniors that will graduate this year, and hopes that things will work out with some of these girls. He hopes for a good team next year
Coach Martindale would like to congratulate the girls for the effort they put into the season. He said that they worked very hard and learned to work together as a team. He said that he compliments the girls on playing hard until the end.
