Utah Legislature funds scholarships

The Utah Legislature, in partnership with the governor, appropriated a significant amount of one-time money for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010 to fund both the New Century and Regents’ Scholarships (Exemplary) at the award level of 70 percent tuition for the college academic year of 2010-11 (fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters).
This is a tremendous commitment from the policymakers to qualified recipients during one of the state’s most severe budget crises, writes a representative from the regent’s office.

Even so, the new money appropriated is less than what is needed to provide the maximum award level of 75 percent of tuition for the upcoming academic year.
The Utah Board of Regents are asking that each college communicate with students who desire to pursue one of these scholarships that you stress award amounts are determined on an annual basis and are subject to legislative funding and number of qualified participants. Therefore, award amounts may be reduced, may vary from year to year, and are dependent on when the recipient is enrolled in college. Funding levels beyond spring semester 2011 are unknown.
There have been significant changes to the New Century Scholarship to be effective for graduating class of 2011 and beyond. It is important that Utah college students understand these changes which have been sent in a letter to all applicants and current recipients.
