Truth in Tuition hearing set

USU-College of Eastern Utah will be one of the colleges and universities across the state to begin the “Truth in Tuition” hearings, which allows students and others to weigh in on proposed tuition increases for the 2011-12 academic year.
The Utah State Board of Regents promised to keep first-tier tuition increases low, because government employees will again not see significant raises in salary this year.

First-tier tuition was set up several years ago to help schools compensate for benefit hikes and cost-of-living increases. Second-tier tuition is set by individual schools based on necessities faced by each campus.
“Because of our history as a rural community college, we’ve fought hard to maintain affordability. Students appreciate USU-CEU’s lowest-in-the-statetuition; however, recent budget cuts and continuing resource stresses are shifting more and more of the costs of education to students and their families. While our first- and second-year tuition will probably remain the lowest in the state, I believe it’s quite likely that our tuition charges next year will increase at a percentage rate similar to USU’s,” said Joe Peterson, USU-CEU chancellor.
Utah Valley University had its hearing on a six to 10 percent increase already while Salt Lake Community College is looking at a three percent increase. The University of Utah trustees approved a second-tier hike of between 7.5 and 9.5 percent, with the final figure contingent on how deeply the Legislature cuts higher education spending once the session ends Thursday. Southern Utah University administrators, proposed a hike between 10 and 15 percent at its truth and tuition hearing.
The Truth in Tuition hearing for USU-CEU is March 16 at 2:30 p.m. in the Multi Purpose Room of the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center. It will be broadcast to the USU-CEU Blanding campus.
A short presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
