Utah State University Easter’s students added 160 volunteer hours to the United Way’s Day of Caring on Sept. 9. According to Sun Center Director, Terry Johnson, 40-student volunteers from Eastern spent Day of Caring helping at the Bryner Pioneer Museum, Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County, The Carbon County Community Garden and yard work at various residences. Eastern’s athletic department sent students from the men and women’s basketball teams, and men and women’s soccer teams to help throughout the day. Eastern’s Student Association, SUN Center and Ambassadors also volunteered from one hour to six hours that day. Men’s Basketball Coach Vando Becheli and assistant coach Ray Jones believe in giving back to the community and brought their entire team to help in the annual event. Plus the team spent Sept. 16, helping the Kiwanis Club with its annual Kid’s Day event in Washington Park. Johnson summed up the day saying, “In spite of stiff competition from other events going on that day, we had a good turn out from USU Eastern volunteers. All of the community members we did service for that day were very appreciative with several indicating that they could have never gotten done what we were able to help them accomplish. One agency was so ecstatic at the help we provided that they vowed to ‘attend as many of Eastern’s sports games as possible’. Makes me humbly proud to be part of our great USU Eastern Family.”
