Influential women: Jen Sincerio and self love

Lillian Hepler staff writer

In honor of Year of The Woman, Utah State University Eastern is pro ling women whose voice makes a difference. One of those voices is Jen Sincero, New York Times No. 1 best selling author.

Sincero has had many life experiences which she talks about in her books that are geared towards self help and overall bettering of one’s life. Words are powerful and depending on how they are used, they can have an everlasting effect on one’s self, good or bad.

It’s people like Sincero that make this world a better place and those that decide negativity and hate is the way to a happy and successful life are truly the ones who need to read what she has to say. With that being said, here are a few tips that Sincero wrote about in her book “You Are a Badass.”

Tip number one: having gratitude in all things. When we are in gratitude of the not yet manifested we are informing the universe that we know that what we desire exists, which then puts us at the right frequency to receive whatever it may be. Something that really stands out in her writing is when she explains that no matter if the outcome of things in our life are mediocre, lame, or excellent, we should always approach each outcome with gratitude. We can always learn some- thing, whether it be good or bad. Good situations are good, and bad situations are also good because there is always something to learn.

A tip Sincero gives to help with a more positive outlook on life is to dedicate a notebook for writing all the things that you are grateful for each day. Studies show that having gratitude can overall better help improve your day, mental awareness, and health.

Tip number two: We’ve all heard this one before, but how well do we apply it into our personal lives? The people that we choose to surround ourselves with are great representations of the person that we are. If you are surrounding yourself with people who don’t think very highly of you, or tear/weigh you down, do you even love yourself? Choose to surround yourself with those who are positive, and have goals. As Sin- cero would say “When you love yourself everybody bene ts.”

Tip number three: Last but not least, let go of the grudges that you may be holding towards others who may have hurt you. In the words of Sincero “Holding onto resentment is like taking poison and waiting for your enemies to die.” Sincero’s book “ You Are a Badass” also talks about how healthy it is to forgive others, even if the other person may not even realize that what they did, or said hurt you. You are still aloud to forgive them for the sake of your happiness and health.

After all “forgiveness is all about taking care of yourself, not the person you need to forgive.” There are three things in the world that you cannot change. Those things being natural disasters, people, and of course the past. Whatever happened, happened and holding on will not change that. If you imagine the person that you are trying to forgive as a little kid, the easier it will be, especially if the person you need to forgive is yourself.

You would treat a child who made a mistake with love, and compassion, so why wouldn’t you do the same for yourself and others around you? Self love people, it’s the way to a happier life.
