Take care of your mental health, even in a pandemic

Being a college student is stressful. There are so many things to worry about: classes, due dates, socializing, tuition. While the list is already endless, there has been a new addition this year. COVID-19.

The global pandemic that shut schools and businesses down is still going strong and affecting our everyday lives. Classes are online, friends can’t gather and socialize, you need a mask to go to class, and many additions to the rules. How are you supposed to stay mentally healthy in the midst of the unknown? Here is a list of tips and tricks to keep you sane in this “new normal.”

Start a Routine

Having a set schedule can allow you to have some control over what seems to be completely out of your hands. Start going to sleep at a normal hour and waking up at the same time every morning. Try to eat your meals around the same time. This will allow you to have a sense of normal and keep you energized throughout the day.

Keep a Journal

Keeping your thoughts jumbled up in your head can only cause more stress. Writing down how your day goes can be calming and it allows you to keep your thoughts out of your head and in one place. An alternative to this is to draw or sketch your emotions, to understand how you are feeling.

Eat Healthier

While comfort food is the first thing on your mind, eating healthier will make you feel so much better. Eating a well balanced meal can decrease anxiety and increase your energy.

Try to Meditate

Meditation might seem like a cliche but it can give you some much needed time to think. It lowers your blood pressure and focuses on your breathing. Adding this to your schedule can make it much easier to get through the week.

Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. USU has many services in place to help you out with your mental health and stability. If you do need help, go to eastern.usu.edu/student-wellness/mental/index#counseling to schedule a meeting with a counselor or see what options are available.

This year has been absolutely insane. Don’t forget to take care of yourself, the stress can catch up to you before you know it. Stay healthy!
