The Eagle continues to bring home awards at Utah Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest

Even in the midst of COVID restrictions, Utah State Eastern’s “The Eagle” newspaper continued to publish and won 21 awards at the Utah Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest in June.

The staff won four-first place awards, 10-second places and seven-third places for material submitted in 2020. The Eagle competes against the University of Utah Chronicle, Weber State University Signpost, USU’s Statesman, Brigham Young University’s Universe and Utah Valley University’s Review.

First-place awards were presented to “The Eagle” staff for Best Circulation Promotion, Best Staff Produced Ad, Best Lifestyle Page designed by Sione Siaki, and Best Community Event designed by Paige Martinez Anderson who won four-layout awards at the annual competition.

Tai Justice has spent his life following sports and was rewarded with a second-place award for Best Sports Column. His bi-monthy column, titled “Tai’s Takes”, talked about the Utah Jazz Being Sold for $1.6 Billion.

Eagle editor Cody Phelps wrote a story on “Eastern Campus Improvements” and won second place for Best News Coverage. He also won second place for a photo he snapped with his cell phone of the yellow, thick air surrounding campus from all the fires burning throughout Utah during the first week of classes fall semester. His final second place award was for a story he wrote about Price city and USU Eastern teaming together to light up the way with the new signage placed throughout the community. He accompanied the story with infographics that helped him win Best Infographics in the newspaper. 

The second place Best Photo Page was designed by Anderson with Levan Hall taking the photos. It was titled, “Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” and featured photos of the USU Eastern’s rodeo. Anderson also won second for Best Sports Page design for Fan Appreciation Night in February 2020.

In addition, Hall won second place for Best Sports Photograph of a cowboy being bucked off his horse during fall semester’s USU Eastern rodeo. He won another second place in the Best Feature Photograph series for a photo of a student creating a colorful art design with liquid paints.

Siaki won second place for Best Special Section for his Black History Month page design published in February.

The Best Advertising Idea was an Eagle self-promotion ad designed by Nathan Milch who won second place overall.

Janelle Bates won third place in the Best Feature Story category for her series on the “Wood Hill Trail System Offering a Quiet Retreat.”

Sara Morley won third place in the Best Education Story category for her story about the nursing department’s 100% pass rate.

After the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former “Eagle” editor Nathaniel Woodward penned an opinion piece titled “Guardian of Peace, Defender of Justice.” He won third place for his writing.

Anderson’s final award was a third-place plaque from the Harrsion R. Merrill’s sponsor of Best Front Page design for the Sept. 11, 2020, edition.

“The Eagle” editor Cody Phelps’ fourth award was his campus coverage of the COVID pandemic throughout 2020.  He won third place for his series.

The Eagle staff’s final awards were the third places for Best In-House Promotion of “Before They Fly Away, Grab One Today,” and Best Website Design by Les Bowen. Adviser to “The Eagle” newspaper is Susan Polster, Ph.D., said, “I am always proud of my student’s work. They always do well against all the other universities in the state in this contest.”
