Three out of four ain’t bad for Lady Eagles

After two weeks of play, the College of Eastern Utah women’s basketball team took three out of four games; two against Dixie State College, and one against Snow College. Foul shots seemed to be the factor against the only game they lost to Snow last weekend. The team is determined to work on their accuracy, and be ready for North Idaho this weekend.
Snow College has always been a strong competitor, but on January 16, it seemed as if nothing was going right for the Lady Eagles. First of all, starter Lindsey Arnoldus was sick and not able to play. According to Coach Dave Paur, it always takes the team out of sync when they lose such a top player. The Lady Eagles lost by only two points, 70-68.
Unfortunately, foul shots were a big factor in why they lost, Snow shot 21 for 28 shots and CEU only shot 6 for 13. Also, the Lady Eagles turned over a season high of 33 balls during this game. Statistically, CEU should have been blown off the court by Snow, but the Lady Eagles kept fighting.
Paur said, “There were so many chances that we had to win, but we just didn’t pull it off.”
Chelsey Warburton led CEU in the game, with 15 points, but her sister Cassie wasn’t too far behind with 12. Although the loss of Arnoldus affected the team, they seemed to have held together as much as they could during the current situation.
Coming into the second game against Snow College on January 17th, Arnoldus was able to return, putting the team back in sync, and helping them win this game by six points. The Lady Eagles shot at an amazing 50 percent, and allowing Snow to shoot at only 28 percent. CEU also improved on their foul shots, shooting 10 out of 15 shots throughout the game. The Lady Eagles won this game with a score of 70-64.
Again, Chelsey Warburton led in points, with 20. Chelsey seemed to dominate the team in points with no other player on the team breaking 10 points.
At home, the Lady Eagles faced off against Dixie State College last weekend. The last time CEU played Dixie State in St. George, they lost both games. This time they did not want to repeat and took both games from the Rebels.
In the first game, CEU dominated the court winning by 10 points. They only shot at 38.9 percent, but were able to pull off the win, even though Dixie shot at 47 percent.
The Lady Eagles basically outplayed Dixie, and it showed with a final score of 80-70.
For the third game in a row, Chelsey Warburton led the Lady Eagles in points. Cassie Warburton and Melissa Disch both had 12 points and Lindsey Arnoldus had 11.
The Eagles stepped up their game in the second game against Dixie. They shot at 41 percent which finally beat Dixie’s 39 percent. They were more focused and did reasonably better with their foul shots. The final score was 97-84, giving the Lady Eagles their second victory last weekend.
There were four amazing players during this game, Cassie Warburton had 19 points, followed by her sister, Chelsey, with 17. Veva Whitear shot for 14 points and Chelsey Jackson finished with 10 points. It seemed as if the team was on top of their game and was determined enough to pull through and dominate Dixie right from the start.
The Lady Eagles will be gearing up to play North Idaho in Cour d’Alene. CEU has already beat North Idaho twice, but Paur feels that if they do well on foul shots, they will have a chance. He felt they will have to shoot well to pull off these wins.
