Now that volleyball has ended, basketball takes over. With Meet the Team Night last week, the men’s and women’s basketball teams showed some of what fans will see in the season.
Members of the CEU men’s basketball team include Eric Dearden, Leon Sutton, Melvin Williams, Darington Hobson, Colby Vranes, Dana Kendrid, Aaron England, Kal Bay, Deante Burgess, David Pugmire, Stephen Franklin, Felix Casperi, Rafael Moreira and Steve Goodell.
During Meet the Team Night, the men’s basketball team got the chance to show off their athleticism in the dunk contest. A lot of players were in the dunk contest and all showed what they could do in the air.
With two new coaches at the helm, the men started off 2-1, averaging 73 points a game and allowing 75 points from their opponents.
Their season began on Nov. 3 when CEU traveled to Cheyenne, Wyo., to play Laramie County Community College. CEU pulled off the first win of the season with a game that came down to the wire, winning 74-72.
“Felix Casperi and Rafael Moreira had a great defensive game helping CEU get the win despite not playing very well,” commented Coach Chris Craig.
Next, they traveled to Thatcher, Ari., where they struggled against Eastern Arizona in a battle that had the Eagles down in the end 78-67. After that loss, CEU got back on track with a win against Scottsdale 80-77 in overtime.
“Down the stretch, we got some key rebounds that sealed the game for us,” said Craig. Bay also hit a big shot late to help CEU get the win. It was good for CEU to get this close game win and get it under their belt so they know what to expect next time.
The men travel to the Mustang Tourney in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Nov 16-17.
