Cynthia Nielsen is the newest member of the USU Eastern advising team, hired as the department’s administrative assistant in March. Nielsen has been a part of USU Eastern long before she was hired, she used to be a student, but is not currently enrolled. She says that her favorite part of the job so far is “the environment, the people I work with and job security.”
Nielsen is a social person and loves to interact with others. She says her least favorite part is that “it’s really quiet and I’m used to being social. There isn’t a lot of that in here [the office].” She used to work in a more social job; downstairs in the Golden Grille Café. She states that “My favorite job would have to be cooking downstairs. It was like a big family there. I loved the social atmosphere it had there.”
When she isn’t working, she teaches dance at the Castle Country Dance Studio where she teaches girls from 11 to 16. Dance has been a big part of her life from the time she was three and still is at 22. When she isn’t working, she is spending time with her family. If money were no object she says she would stay at home with her kids and spend more time with them.
In Nielsen’s opinion, the top five qualities needed to be an administrative assistant are: you have to be able to communicate with people, know how to work a computer, not be scared to manage a phone , organization is big and you have to be the boss’ right-hand person by remembering things and keeping organized for them. She says that one of her biggest pet peeves is when people tap their fingernails or constantly clicks a pen. Remember that the next time you walk into the advising center.
“She’s good, she’s got the perfect, dynamic personality and does a great job working with students and running the front desk.” states Shanny Wilson, director of academic advising and orientation.
