Starting in February, self-defense classes have been held on campus once a month. The campus police meet with students to teach them simple yet effective ways to defend oneself in a time of danger.
SUN Center Leader, Lindly Fernandez was in charge of putting the classes together. “I wanted to start this class to give students an opportunity to learn how to feel safe on campus and know how to protect
themselves. I feel that the past two classes have helped a lot and we have enjoyed working with the campus police to make everyone on campus feel safe. Although we discuss serious matters, the class can still be fun and help build campus unity.”
When Student Body President, Thomas Garvin, found out about the self-defense classes being held on campus he was thrilled about it. “It’s something that I have wanted to see on campus over the last three years that I have been here. I think it is important to build confidence in oneself so that in a time of danger one will know how to respond.”
The next class is tentatively scheduled for April 17 and held in the SAC Ballroom. Check the calendar for additional dates.
