Former baseball coach dies

At 51, former CEU Assistant Baseball Coach Darren Earl Garrick died on April 3, in Salt Lake City.
Garrick, who grew up in Kearns and graduated from Kearns High School, began his baseball career in local little league. At Kearns High he was all-state pitcher and also very accomplished in basketball.

Garrick, who grew up in Kearns and graduated from Kearns High School, began his baseball career in local little league. At Kearns High he was all-state pitcher and also very accomplished in basketball.
After graduating in 1979 he went to Snow College on a baseball scholarship and later to Southern Utah State College, later Southern Utah University. Recruited in the 20th round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 1984, during his senior year, he also signed a contract with Topps Bubblegum Baseball Cards, which venture proved to be of a $5 value.
Garrick also played seasons with the Miami Marlins, Kinston Eagles, the Salt Lake Trappers and the North Pole Nicks. In 1988 he returned to Utah as a coach for both the Trappers and, for a season, the CEU Eagles before leaving to coach in New South Wales, Australia.
According to his facebook obituary, Garrick was a man who inspired numerous athletes to shoot for the stars, and will be remembered as a success of baseball.
