Remington Grace, a freshman from Ferron, placed first in welding which qualifies him to compete at the SkillsUSA national finals in Kansas City, Mo., in June. This is the 10th year that USU-Eastern (CEU) has won the Utah SkillsUSA welding competition.
In welding fabrication, the USU Eastern team of Austin Welch and Dexter Thayn, Price, and Chad Malnar, Roosevelt, placed first.  The USU-Eastern fabrication team are the reigning national champions and by winning again at the Utah SkillsUSA competition, they have earned the right to defend their national championship in Kansas City this June.  This will create a unique opportunity for Welch because he and Thayn, won the national championship at the high school level in 2010; then (with different teammates) won at the college level in 2011.  Now, teaming up with Malnar, Welch will attempt to win a third national championship in welding fabrication.
Although Eastern has experienced a lot of success in various welding competitions, they have never had a single competitor span the high school and college divisions to win three national titles. Eastern has won the Utah fabrication contest at the college level every year since its inception in 2008 and earned national medals in each of the corresponding years. Their professors are Mike Tryon and Lon Youngberg.
Joel Johnson, a Carbon High School and USU Eastern student from Price, placed first in the diesel skills high school competition. He qualified to compete in nationals in June and will attend with his professor Dean Collard.
Two cosmetology students placed first and second in the nail category. Tawnya Metelko , Spring Glen, and Morgan Johnson, Price, placed first and second respectfully. Their professors are Linda Davis and Debbie Prichard.
