The USU Eastern baseball team’s woes continue. The past two series have led to two series sweeps by the hands of College of Southern Idaho and College of Western Nevada. The team who have lost the last four series is now prepping to play Colorado Northwestern this weekend in Rangely, CO.
In the series of against College of Southern Idaho the weather again was not in any way helping either team. With freezing weather and gusty winds forced both teams to play small-ball. The Golden Eagles got a great start in the first game from Kort Christoffersen who pitched 5 1/3 and only gave up two earned runs. Relief pitcher Anthony Gustin came in and walked the only two batters he faced which allowed the eventual winning run in. The Golden Eagles lost the first game 2-1. USU Eastern went on to get swept by CSI by scores of 11-1, 10-3 and 10-0.
Western Nevada College, who is the 15 ranked team in the nation came to town for a series against the boys of Summer. The results were the same as the Golden Eagles were swept 12-4, 11-2, 13-2 and 5-0. Again, Kort Christoffersen threw a gem as he only allowed one earned run in five innings of work. The Wildcats’ pitching shut down the Eastern offense all weekend. Western’s pitching staff features two players who will be drafted high in this year’s professional baseball draft.
As the Golden Eagles wind down their season their focus turns to the conference tournament. About this time last year the team caught fire and ended up taking fourth in the conference. “ We are mirroring last year. I think we will get some momentum over the next few weeks to allow us to make a run in the tournament.” USU Eastern next year will become independent of the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC). This year they are 7-4 against those teams.
The next home series will be April 27-28 against Salt Lake Community College.
